Chapter 22 -- Henry H. Loop of Chautauqua County, NY

Henry H. LOOP [notes] [ ]. This is the ancestor of the author of this book. Henry H. Loop's exact ancestry has not been determined. However, recent DNA testing has shown that he was a descendant of Ensign Henry Loop.  He is probably descended either from son "Vermont" Henry Loop, or son Andrew Loop.  Many different dates occur in various records for the birth date of Henry H. Loop. His death certificate gives his date of birth as February 15, 1827. This information was given by his daughter Bertha. It is likely that at least the February 15 is correct. His tombstone, which has disappeared, gave his year of birth as 1838. It is likely he ordered his tombstone before his death. The 1855, 1860, 1865, 1880, and 1900 census records give his date of birth as about 1829, 1832, 1833, 1834, and 1844, respectively. His death certificate lists his father's name as John Loop and says his father was born in Germany. However, Ray Douglas, a family in-law who studied the family genealogy in the 1920's, said Henry's father's name was also Henry Loop, and that would be consistent with Henry's middle initial "H" shown on his death certificate. For as has been pointed out, it was traditional in the Loop family at that time for sons to use the initial of their father's first name as their own middle initial. Henry Loop always claimed to have been born in Chautauqua County, New York. There is a court suit against a Henry Loop in 1831 in Chautauqua County. There was a Henry Loop censused in Chautauqua County in 1830. But in the 1835 census, a John Loop is living in the same house, and is apparently not the same person. This John Loop is the son of "Vermont" Henry Loop. "Vermont" Henry Loop had a son Henry Loop who died about 1830 after having at least one son (Almond H. Loop). It is tempting to think that this Henry was the father of Henry H. Loop, but there is no good evidence to support that. Henry H. Loop does not appear in the 1850 census of Chautauqua County, but in 1855 he is censused there in the household of Nicholas THUM, apparently as a farm laborer, though he is listed as "adopted son". This is unlikely, as he was not with the family five years earlier. His county of birth is listed as "unknown", which means someone else gave his information to the census taker. He is still living with Nicholas Thum in 1860. He married, June 30, 1864, Luana MARSH, at Dewittville, Chautauqua County, New York. She was born in 1846, in New York, the daughter of Merritt MARSH and Olive REED. Henry H. Loop was a farmer. In 1865, his farm is described as:

65 acres improved, 80 unimproved, value of farm $5800, value of stock $1200, value of tools $200, 10 acres plowed, 40 acres pasture, 35 acres meadow, 35 tons hay, 2 acres wheat for 12 bushels, 6 acres oats for 75 bushels, 3 acres corn for 100 bushels, 1/2 acre potatoes for 45 bushels, 200 apple trees for 150 bushels and 1 barrel cider, 180 lbs maple sugar, 1 gallon maple molasses, 3 calves, 14 cows for 1200 lbs butter, 1 cow slaughtered, 2 horses, 3 pigs, 2 pigs slaughtered for 250 lbs pork, 20 sheep shorn for 70 lbs wool, poultry worth $5, eggs worth $16, 70 yards of flannel.

Luana (Marsh) Loop died between 1880 and 1890, in Chautauqua County, New York. Henry H. Loop died January 10, 1911, in Fredonia, Chautauqua County, New York. Both he and his wife are buried at Mayville, Chautauqua County, New York.
